Huntington Bank's Charlotte Expansion: What Does It Mean for Local Real Estate?

One South tower at Trade and Tryon in Uptown Charlotte

A new green name is joining Charlotte's skyline. Huntington National Bank is adding its name to One South at Trade and Tryon, the Uptown tower formerly known as Bank of America Plaza.

But the sign is only part of the story. The bank's growing Charlotte presence raises a bigger question: what does another financial expansion mean for the people who live here?

Why is Huntington Bank putting its name on One South?

Huntington opened its Charlotte regional headquarters in 2023 with about 40 employees on half of one floor. Now, several hundred employees work at One South and other locations across the Charlotte area.

The Ohio-based bank announced plans to take the 39th and 40th floors, doubling its footprint in the 40-story tower to four full floors. It's a bigger commitment to Uptown, not simply a new logo.

What will the new sign look like?

The Huntington Bank sign will face South Tryon Street and measure roughly 13 feet tall and 88 feet wide, according to the Charlotte Observer.

Rock Hill-based SouthWood Corporation is fabricating and installing it. Programmable lighting will feature Huntington's signature green, with the ability to change colors for community observances.

How big is Huntington's expansion in the Carolinas?

The Uptown office is part of a wider push. Huntington announced plans in 2024 to open approximately 55 branches across the Carolinas. In its September 2026 update, the bank said 14 full-service branches had opened across 10 markets.

Following its merger with Cadence Bank earlier this year, Huntington is now a top-10 U.S. commercial bank.

Why should Charlotte homeowners and buyers care?

The connection is straightforward: growing employers bring jobs and paychecks, and those workers need somewhere to live. As Jay points out in the Reel, that housing search can stretch from South End and Dilworth to Fort Mill and Rock Hill.

That doesn't mean one bank expansion guarantees higher home values. It does make employment growth worth watching alongside housing supply and affordability.

Is Charlotte's bank growth building wealth or making homes harder to afford?

That's the question behind the skyline change. More finance jobs can bring opportunity, while demand for housing can create a different experience for existing homeowners and people trying to buy their first home.

What do you think? Is Charlotte's banking growth building wealth for local residents, or making it harder for the next generation to stay?
