A bright magenta locomotive parked on the tracks in NoDa has been stopping people mid-scroll and mid-commute. It's not a new transit line. It's a bar.

Engine Room 87 is setting up at 409 E. 35th St., and it's shaping up to be one of the most unusual openings Charlotte's arts district has seen. Here's what to know before you go.

What is Engine Room 87?

Engine Room 87 is a bar being built around the magenta locomotive parked at 409 E. 35th St. in NoDa. Plans include a 24-tap self-pour bar pouring NoDa beer, cocktails, and a rooftop deck.

Can you see it before it opens?

Yes. A free preview runs this Thursday, Oct. 22, from 4 to 7 p.m. It's a first look at the locomotive and the space before the full opening.

What about actual train rides?

That's the bigger plan. In spring 2027, restored vintage train rides are expected to roll in, including a Christmas train to Mint Hill. A mystery dinner ride and a brunch ride have also been teased.

Why does it matter for NoDa?

NoDa keeps landing the kind of one-of-a-kind venues that turn a neighborhood into a destination. A vintage locomotive bar with real train rides on the horizon is one more reason the area stays on visitors' and buyers' radar.

Mystery dinner, brunch ride, or Christmas train: which one are you booking first, and who's coming with you? Tell us in the comments on the Reel.
